over charge

We payed our Verizon bill as always ($113.xx)Verizon mistakingly used the check to debit almost $300 from our account. After several phone calls and hours on hold Verizon still refused to refund the Money. They said the best they could do is a credit. I told them that I would call my bank and put a stop payment on the check then send another one for the correct amount. They said they would charge me a returned check fee! I was repetedly told that if I wanted my money back I would have to provide bank statements, then it would be about three weeks.
