| Verizon yells "FIRE" in a crowded theater |
Verizon apologized for setting off a panic in three New Jersey counties yesterday when it told residents in a text message to “take shelter before 1:24 p.m.” because of a “civil emergency” in their area.
But what was labeled as an “extreme alert” was just a “test message” that was mislabeled, Verizon said.
The bogus alert was issued at 12:26 p.m. and received by residents in Middlesex, Monmouth and Ocean counties.
“We apologize for any inconvenience or concern this message may have caused,” the company said in a statement.
